Why Evening Sessions

Tacitskills is a company that caters to busy professionals by offering live interactive courses that take place in the evenings between 19:00 and 22:00. This allows professionals to continue working on important projects during the day and complete the course in the evenings. To make the most of their time, the courses are split into 3 hour sessions per evening, rather than requiring professionals to take time off work to attend full-day training sessions. About This Course

This course is accredited and approved by the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA). On completion professionals will earn 2 ECSA CPD Points. PMI Certificate holders will be eligible to claim 7 PDUs from the Project Management Institute (PMI)  The course on Basic Road Construction Principles covers a range of topics related to the construction of roads. In the first session, professionals will learn the preconditions for road building, assessments and valuation, design criteria, the tender phase and documentation, and contract basics. The second session focuses on planning and programming, including the phases of a contract and administration, establishment and P&G, planning, programming, labour employment, and the duties of the CE, PSC, and CLO. The third session covers new technology and sustainability in road building, including the latest materials, methods, and ideas for building more sustainably.

The fourth session covers the technical aspects of road building, including terminology and standard units, types of materials, basic material mechanics, quality assurance and testing, modern technology, and the effect of weather on roads. The fifth session covers survey in construction, including basic surveying methods, setting out and levelling, quantity surveying, soils surveying, and equipment used in surveying. The sixth session covers the construction process, including reading from plans and drawings, visual assessment, clearing and grubbing, earthworks, layer works, services, confined areas, water handling, and subsoil drains. The seventh session covers the surfacing of roads, including different types of surfaces, the wearing course, surface defects, rehabilitation and reconstruction, pothole repairs, and crack sealing.

The eighth session covers the operation of plant and equipment, including small plant and tools, earthmoving equipment, operators and drivers, and safety specifications. The ninth session covers road furnishing and ancillary works, including road signs, kerbing and paving for sidewalks, minor concrete structures, drainage, and erosion protection. The final session covers finances and economics, including pricing of tenders and quotations, productivity and profit, and site costing.

Your Instructor

Theuns Eloff

Theuns is a civil engineering graduate who started his career as a junior site agent with Raubex Construction. He worked his way up to the position of site agent, and eventually became one of the first site agents for an affiliate of Raubex called Road Mac Surfacing, where he worked on national road rehabilitation projects in South Africa. After four years with Raubex, Theuns joined Patula Construction, where he spent nine years and held various roles including safety officer, site agent, foreman, contracts manager, and quantity surveyor. In 2007, he started his own company called Construction Consultant, which focuses on helping develop small to medium-sized businesses in the construction industry. Since 2009, Theuns has worked as a presenter and facilitator for various organizations, including SAICE, Candidate Academy, EHI, ABC, Joshua West, Kurt Joshua, Amabhubesi, Umoja, Oxford Training, CPD Africa, DPWP Eastern Cape, Western Cape, and various municipalities. He has presented more than 500 courses on topics such as road construction, road maintenance, road rehabilitation, contract administration and management, pothole repairs, tendering, GCC, estimating and costing, SIPDM, planning, and tendering to over 8500 delegates in 15 countries. Theuns has also been a speaker at the African Roads Maintenance Seminar.
