Why Evening Sessions

Tacitskills is a company that caters to busy professionals by offering live interactive courses that take place in the evenings between 19:00 and 22:00. This allows professionals to continue working on important projects during the day and complete the course in the evenings. To make the most of their time, the courses are split into 3 hour sessions per evening, rather than requiring professionals to take time off work to attend full-day training sessions. About This Course

This course is accredited and approved by the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA). On completion professionals will earn 2 ECSA CPD Points. PMI Certificate holders will be eligible to claim 14 PDUs from the Project Management Institute (PMI) The course on Roads, Stormwater Construction and Maintenance covers a range of topics related to the construction and maintenance of roads and stormwater structures. In the first session, students will learn about the brief history of road building, the preconditions for road building and maintenance, the list of TRH, TMH and UTG documents, and a glossary of abbreviations. The second session covers the fundamentals of roads, including the role players in civil projects in South Africa and the design process and considerations.

The third session covers types of plant and equipment, including small plant and tools and construction equipment. The fourth session covers technical aspects of materials and roads, including terminology and standard units, types of materials for construction and maintenance, safety aspects of materials, basic material mechanics, quality assurance and testing, and the effect of weather on roads.

The fifth session covers the construction process, including reading from plans and drawings, visual assessment, clearing and grubbing, earthworks, layer works, services, confined and restricted areas, and water handling. The sixth session covers road management, including asset management, the Laffer curve, PMS, and maintenance types.

The seventh session covers the surfacing of roads, including general considerations, surface seals, other surface types, and reseal. The eighth session covers distress identification and repairs, including distress types, cracks, crack sealing, potholes and patches, deformation, rigid defects, surface enrichment treatments, shoulder maintenance, and a summary of the topics covered. The final session covers drainage and maintenance of stormwater structures, including stormwater design, stormwater maintenance, hydraulic structures, erosion protection, subsoil drains, and a summary of drainage maintenance.

  • In Session 1, the Introduction to Roads, participants will learn about the history of road building and the preconditions necessary for road building and maintenance. They will also be introduced to a list of TRH, TMH, and UTG documents, as well as a glossary of terms and abbreviations that will be used throughout the course.
     

  • In Session 2, Roads Fundamentals, participants will learn about the role of various players in civil projects in South Africa, as well as the design process and considerations that go into building and maintaining roads.
     

  • Session 3 focuses on Types of Plant and Equipment, where participants will learn about the various types of small plant and tools, as well as construction equipment that are used in road building and maintenance.
     

  • In Session 4, Technical Aspects of Materials & Roads, participants will learn about the terminology and standard units used in the field, as well as the different types of materials that are used for construction and maintenance. They will also be introduced to the safety aspects of materials, basic material mechanics, quality assurance and testing, and the impact of weather on roads.
     

  • Session 5 covers The Construction Process, including topics such as reading from plans and drawings, visual assessment, clearing and grubbing, earthworks, layer works, services, working in confined and restricted areas, and water handling.
     

  • Session 6 discusses Road Management, including topics such as asset management, the Laffer curve, PMS (Performance Measurement System), and the different types of maintenance that are used to keep roads in good condition.
     

  • Session 7 focuses on Surfacing of Roads, including general information about different surface types, surface seals, reseals, and other surface treatments.
     

  • In Session 8, Distress Identification and Repairs, participants will learn about the different types of distress that can occur on roads, including cracks, potholes, deformation, and rigid defects. They will also learn about various repair techniques such as crack sealing, patching, and surface enrichment treatments, as well as shoulder maintenance.
     

  • Session 10 covers Drainage & Maintenance of Stormwater Structures, including topics such as stormwater design, stormwater maintenance, hydraulic structures, erosion protection, subsoil drains, and general drainage maintenance.

Instalment Option

The option to pay for this course in two installments is available for professionals. The full balance must be paid in full seven days prior to the start of the course. If the balance is not paid before the start of the course, the delegate will not be permitted to attend the course and no refunds will be issued. It is important to note that all installment options are non-refundable. Please note that the installment option is only valid for professionals who register for the course more than two months in advance. If you register for the course less than two months in advance and have only one month remaining until the start of the course, the installment option will not be available and you will need to pay the full price.

Your Instructor

Theuns Eloff

Theuns is a civil engineering graduate who started his career as a junior site agent with Raubex Construction. He worked his way up to the position of site agent, and eventually became one of the first site agents for an affiliate of Raubex called Road Mac Surfacing, where he worked on national road rehabilitation projects in South Africa. After four years with Raubex, Theuns joined Patula Construction, where he spent nine years and held various roles including safety officer, site agent, foreman, contracts manager, and quantity surveyor. In 2007, he started his own company called Construction Consultant, which focuses on helping develop small to medium-sized businesses in the construction industry. Since 2009, Theuns has worked as a presenter and facilitator for various organizations, including SAICE, Candidate Academy, EHI, ABC, Joshua West, Kurt Joshua, Amabhubesi, Umoja, Oxford Training, CPD Africa, DPWP Eastern Cape, Western Cape, and various municipalities. He has presented more than 500 courses on topics such as road construction, road maintenance, road rehabilitation, contract administration and management, pothole repairs, tendering, GCC, estimating and costing, SIPDM, planning, and tendering to over 8500 delegates in 15 countries. Theuns has also been a speaker at the African Roads Maintenance Seminar.
